Competitive alternative to the plane:

Very high-speed trains Katao and Veloce

Our mobility behaviour must change in order to be sustainable in the long term. To ensure a sustainable modal split, the intensity of the use of different means of transport needs to shift, reducing emissions as well as energy and resource consumption.

In comparison to aircrafts, trains already offer numerous advantages: Thanks to a larger space, more freedom of movement and a variety of communication possibilities, travel time can be put to better use. The absence of security checks and waiting periods as well as comparatively simpler booking ensures easy access. Nevertheless, rail travel usually is less attractive than air travel due to greater travel times.

In collaboration with the automotive engineering specialists QUITO streamlining & engineering, Spirit Design has been developing the high-speed trains of the future: The ‘Katao’ was developed specifically for the Asian market; the ‘Veloce’ falls in line with European rail design. Both herald a paradigm shift and provide a competitive alternative to air travel. On the one hand, they are intended to travel at speeds of up to between 400 und 500 km/h; considerably faster than previously existing passenger trains. On the other hand, they offer additional, attractive opportunities, such as conference rooms or cinemas, to make optimal use of the travel time. Because of its novel design, they deliver a strong statement and help to provide an innovative image. This contributes to encourage an end-user’s willingness to change their travel behaviour.

Thanks to its aerodynamic exterior design, the Katao, in alluding to a catamaran, is reminiscent of the heyday of rail travel. The conveyed design language communicates the reincarnation of the powerful steam locomotive. The Veloce has a separate chassis from the passenger compartment, which offers significant advantages in terms of noise levels and therefore passenger comfort. The design of both trains conveys dynamics and speed and thus also heralds a mobility paradigm shift at the level of communication. The technological equipment also sets new standards: The lighting and interior were designed for low-emissions impact and are particularly resource and environmentally friendly.
